MNGL Upgrades Talegaon Gas Handling Capacity Nearly 10-Fold to Boost Pune Supply
Pune, 18th September 2026: Maharashtra Natural Gas Ltd (MNGL) has upgraded the gas handling capacity at its RT station in Talegaon from 75,000 standard cubic metres per day (SCMD) to 7 lakh SCMD (0.7 MMSCMD), strengthening the natural gas supply network in Pune.
The upgrade, undertaken jointly by GAIL and MNGL, was successfully commissioned and integrated into the network on September 11, 2026.
The project is part of MNGL’s phased network augmentation programme aimed at increasing gas supply capacity, improving network pressure, strengthening pipeline infrastructure, creating alternative supply routes and enhancing the reliability of CNG supply.
Two key works have been completed at Talegaon. Pipeline looping was completed in the second week of August, enabling stronger gas supply from RT Talegaon towards RT Pune (Chikhali) and improving network connectivity, flexibility and route redundancy.
The existing 75,000 SCMD gas handling skid at Talegaon has also been replaced with a new 0.7 MMSCMD skid. Associated piping, hook-up and integration works have been completed.
The upgrades have added around 3 lakh SCMD of throughput capacity for the Pune gas network and are expected to improve pressure availability by up to 1.5 bar in distant parts of the city’s city gas distribution (CGD) network.
MNGL said the additional capacity will help ensure uninterrupted supply to CNG stations, minimise issues caused by low network pressure and cater to rising demand from new CNG stations and PNG consumers. The upgraded network will also have provisions for further capacity enhancement through hot-tapping.
Meanwhile, the next phase of the project is underway. GAIL is upgrading the existing 4-inch pipeline at Talegaon to an 8-inch pipeline through hot-tapping. The work is scheduled for completion by December 31, 2026.
MNGL said the phased upgrades would improve gas availability, network pressure, operational flexibility and supply reliability across Pune, while creating additional capacity to meet future demand.
