Mohol Proposes New Metro Routes: Kharadi to Pune Airport, Katraj to Hinjawadi
Pune, 6th February 2025: Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation, Murlidhar Mohol, has proposed several new metro rail routes aimed at improving connectivity across Pune. Key routes include a direct metro line from Kharadi to Pune Airport, another from Katraj to Hinjawadi, and the establishment of a multimodal transport hub at Kharadi.
In a meeting held on Wednesday, Mohol directed the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to approve the proposal for a Detailed Project Report (DPR) to be prepared by the Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro).
“The new metro line should connect the Pune International Airport to Khadakwasla as part of the proposed Khadakwasla-Swargate-Hadapsar-Kharadi route,” Mohol said, stressing the importance of enhancing transportation infrastructure in the city.
The proposed transport hub at Kharadi would serve as a crucial interchange point, benefiting commuters from surrounding areas such as Chandani Chowk, Wagholi, Nigdi, Swargate, Shivajinagar, Hinjawadi, Khadakwasla, and Hadapsar. “This hub will provide a seamless metro connection to the Pune Airport, easing travel for residents of these key areas,” Mohol added.
The minister also proposed a double-decker flyover to be built along the Vanaz to Chandani Chowk route, aimed at easing traffic congestion and facilitating smoother metro access.
During the meeting, Maha-Metro Managing Director Shravan Hardikar confirmed that they had already received a letter from Minister Mohol regarding the DPR for the proposed metro routes. Atul Gadgil, Director (Works) at Maha-Metro, added, “The next step is for PMC to formally send a letter to Maha-Metro, so we can proceed with the preparation of the DPR.”
The ambitious proposals are expected to significantly improve Pune’s public transportation system and provide much-needed relief to commuters, making the city more accessible and reducing road traffic.
