Pune, 6th February 2025: The Maharashtra Registration and Stamps Department has fully digitalized the marriage registration notice system under the Special Marriage Act, 1954, streamlining the process for couples and eliminating the role of middlemen. With this transition, physical visits to the registrar’s office are no longer required, reducing delays and unauthorized fees.

After a successful pilot in select districts, including Pune, the online system has now been implemented across the state. Last year, the digital platform processed 31,758 notices, and within the past month alone, 3,412 new notices have been recorded.

Officials from the registration department emphasized that this shift has reduced the influence of intermediaries. “Earlier, couples had to make multiple visits to the registrar’s office and often ended up seeking assistance from agents. Now, the online system has made the process straightforward and transparent,” an official stated.

Under the Special Marriage Act, 1954, couples must submit a 30-day notice of their intended marriage, which is then publicly displayed for objections, if any. If no objections arise, the marriage must be registered within 60 days from the date of notice submission.

The new system uses Aadhaar-based verification to simplify documentation. Additionally, it cross-checks data from all sub-registrar offices to prevent fraudulent registrations and cases of multiple marriages.

Officials confirmed that an older version of the system was operational last year, but the current platform has improved functionality. “This updated version has made the process smoother, and we are working on introducing more features to enhance efficiency,” an official added.
