Mumbai-Pune-Hyderabad Bullet Train Project Moves Ahead After DPR Approval
Pune, 29th August 2026: The proposed 671-km Mumbai-Pune-Hyderabad bullet train project has moved a step closer to implementation after the detailed project report (DPR) was completed and approved by the Railway Ministry.
The approval is expected to pave the way for further preparations, including the identification and acquisition of land required for the corridor.
The high-speed rail project, which will connect Maharashtra, Karnataka and Telangana, is estimated to cost between ₹1.5 lakh crore and ₹2 lakh crore. Trains on the proposed corridor are expected to operate at speeds of up to 300 kmph.
Currently, a train journey between Mumbai and Hyderabad takes around 12 to 15 hours. The proposed bullet train is expected to reduce the travel time to approximately 3 to 3.5 hours. The Mumbai-Pune journey is expected to take around 48 minutes.
The National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL), along with the revenue administration, has begun the process of identifying land required for the project. Around 93 km of the proposed route will pass through Telangana, while the remaining stretch will run through Maharashtra and Karnataka.
The corridor is proposed to connect Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Lonavala, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Pune, Baramati, Pandharpur, Solapur, Kalaburagi in Karnataka, Vikarabad and Hyderabad.
A high-speed rail hub spread across approximately 500 acres is also planned near Shamshabad airport in Hyderabad. The hub is expected to serve as a major terminal and connectivity point for the corridor.
The project is expected to strengthen connectivity between Mumbai and Hyderabad, two major economic and IT centres. It could also benefit cities such as Pune, Solapur and Kalaburagi by improving access to major urban centres and potentially boosting investment, employment and economic activity along the corridor.
