Mumbai: Rohit Sharma Jokes About Dropping Suryakumar Yadav After Crucial T20 World Cup Catch
Mumbai, 6th July 2024: Rohit Sharma humorously remarked that he would have excluded Suryakumar Yadav from the playing XI if he had missed the crucial catch of David Miller during the 2024 T20 World Cup final. Suryakumar made a stunning catch at long-off on the first ball of the final over, with South Africa needing 16 runs from six balls. This catch dismissed Miller, South Africa’s last recognized batter, preventing a potential six.
Rohit Sharma, along with Suryakumar Yadav, Shivam Dube, and Yashasvi Jaiswal—who all play for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy—met Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Friday, July 5. During the meeting, Rohit joked, “After Surya caught the ball, he told me that the ball settled in his hand. Thank goodness it did. Otherwise, I would have benched him.”
David Miller aimed for a powerful start to the final over bowled by Hardik Pandya. Suryakumar Yadav’s exceptional effort was required to secure the catch; he had to catch the ball, toss it up, and then retrieve it from beyond the boundary. India ultimately won the final by seven runs in a match that seemed challenging when South Africa needed only 30 runs in 30 balls.
In addition, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde announced a Rs 11 crore reward for the victorious Indian team, following the BCCI’s announcement of a Rs 125 crore prize for winning the T20 World Cup title.
