Pune, 18th June 2025: In a major move to improve safety and infrastructure at tourist hotspots, a new bridge with modern features will be constructed at Kundmala in Maval taluka — the site of a tragic bridge collapse that claimed four lives and injured more than 50 people last Sunday.

Pune District Collector Jitendra Dudi announced the plan, stating, “The new bridge will be 7.5 meters wide and will include 8-foot-wide pedestrian footpaths on both sides. A dedicated viewing gallery will also be developed to facilitate safe sightseeing for visitors. Additional funds are being allocated, and the work will begin immediately after the monsoon season.”

The announcement comes in the wake of the fatal incident on 15 June, when a large crowd of over 100 tourists had gathered on the old, dilapidated bridge over the Indrayani River. The bridge gave way under the weight, leading to the deaths of four persons and injuries to many others.

The upcoming structure will not only provide a safe passage across the river but also offer scenic views for visitors, addressing both utility and tourism needs. Authorities are also planning additional safety measures at the site, including barricading, restricted access during high footfall, and better coordination with local police and disaster response teams.

Collector Dudi reiterated the administration’s commitment to improving infrastructure and safety at tourist spots across Pune district, especially during the high-traffic monsoon season.
