Viman Nagar, 24th January 2024: A newly constructed 200-meter-long and 24-meter-wide alternative route connecting Mhada Colony in Vimannagar to the Lohegaon airport exit gate is set to become operational within a week.

The initiative aims to alleviate congestion on the existing road linking the airport to the Pune-Ahmednagar highway near the Ramwadi underpass, offering a viable alternative for travelers heading towards Mundhwa, Kharadi, Wagholi, Hadapsar, and surrounding areas.

Pune airport director Santosh Dhoke highlighted the benefits of the new route, stating, “The road will provide flyers with a separate exit route, reducing delays caused by traffic jams. The dedicated stretch will enhance connectivity to the Pune-Ahmednagar road, with the Indian Air Force (IAF) generously providing land at a minimal annual rent for the project.”

Currently accommodating over 30,000 passengers daily, including more than 500 international travelers, Pune airport experiences significant traffic congestion. The new route, sanctioned by the Union Ministry of Defence on September 19, 2022, allows Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to work on connecting the proposed road on 0.58 acres of its land at a nominal annual license fee.

PMC section engineer Sunil Mule explained the construction details, stating, “The stretch adheres to conditions set by the defence ministry, including the construction of 10-foot walls on both sides for security. Additional measures, such as barbed wire fencing, are currently in progress. Once the remaining work on pavements, pipes, and cables is completed, the road will be open to the public.”
