New Year : 662 drunk drivers caught in Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad

Pune, January 1, 2020: During the crackdown on drunk drivers on the New Years’ Eve, the traffic police took action against 662 motorists — 460 in Pune and 202 in Pimpri Chinchwad — for driving vehicles under the influence of alcohol. No fatal or serious accidents were reported.
Last year, 997 people were booked including 873 in Pune and 124 in Pimpri-Chinchwad. Before that in 2018, 1,144 drivers were booked on the intervening night of December 31, 2017, and January 1, 2018. Of them, 807 were in Pune and the remaining 337 in Pimpri Chinchwad.
This year, within the Pune police commissionerate, the traffic police divisions in Koregaon Park (42), Warje (38), Wanawadi (33) and Sinhagad Road (25), had booked the highest number of drunk drivers, said Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Sanjay Shinde.
According to DCP Sudhir Hiremath of Pimpri-Chinchwad police, most drunk drivers were caught in Bhosari (36), Pimpri (27), Nigdi (26) and Dehu Road-Talegaon (23) traffic divisions.
The operation against drunk driving went off smoothly. There were no reports of fatal or serious accidents.
The chargesheets in the drunk and drive cases are filed under section 185 of the Motor Vehicles Act at the Motor Vehicles Court. The court has powers to suspend licences under section 20 of the Act as well.
