Pune, 9th January 2025: The Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) has sought clarification from the Maharashtra State Government regarding the felling of trees in the NIBM area. The National Green Tribunal (NGT) had taken suo motu cognizance of the issue after media reports highlighted the large-scale tree cutting, leading to concerns about the reserved forest area around NIBM.

The NGT’s Western Bench registered a case, noting the potential ecological impact of the deforestation. Concerned citizens had raised alarms over the destruction of greenery in the area, prompting the tribunal to act. In its previous hearing on 13th November 2024, the tribunal directed the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF), MoEFCC, and the Pune District Magistrate to submit detailed responses.

During the latest hearing, the MoEFCC informed the tribunal that it had requested information from the state authorities but is still awaiting a response. However, the Pune District Magistrate failed to file the required report, leading the NGT to issue a reminder for compliance.

The NGT has now instructed the District Magistrate to provide a comprehensive explanation regarding the felling of trees before the next hearing scheduled for 27th January 2025. The said case underscores growing concerns over environmental violations in urban areas and the need for stricter enforcement of forest conservation laws.
