Pune, 9th January 2025: A shocking viral video showing stray dogs scavenging on partially burnt remains at the Vaikunth crematorium has sparked outrage and raised serious questions about the facility’s security and hygiene standards. The crematorium, one of the busiest in Pune, has now become the center of a heated debate.

Abhijit Baravkar, a social activist from Dattawadi, has lodged a formal complaint with the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), demanding action against those responsible. However, PMC officials have dismissed the allegations, claiming that the dogs in the video were seen carrying large pieces of bread, not human remains. This contradictory stance has fueled widespread speculation and demands for immediate action to control the stray dog menace in the area.

The incident reportedly occurred on Wednesday morning when a group of citizens visited the crematorium for a relative’s last rites. Witnesses were horrified to see stray dogs near a pyre, seemingly feasting on something. Concerned by the situation, they informed Baravkar and attempted to chase the dogs away, capturing the incident on video. The footage soon went viral, leading to public outrage.

Following the video’s circulation, senior PMC officials conducted a site inspection and claimed that the dogs were not carrying human remains but pieces of bread. This explanation, however, has done little to pacify citizens demanding stricter measures to manage stray animals and ensure the sanctity of the crematorium.

The issue has also led to blame-shifting between PMC’s Health and Electrical Departments.

“Our responsibilities are limited to pollution control measures and operating the electric crematorium. Overall management and maintenance of the facility fall under the jurisdiction of the regional office and the Health Department, which have dedicated manpower for these tasks,” clarified Manisha Shekatkar, Head of the Electrical Departments.

Despite these claims, citizens and activists have reiterated the need for a thorough investigation and immediate steps to improve security and hygiene at the crematorium. The viral video has sparked concern demanding solid action.
