Pune, May 24, 2020: There is Good news for students and parents who are in financial trouble due to Coronavirus outbreak. Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) had formulated a new fee this year. However, the decision to postpone the fee hike for one year was taken at a meeting of the Vidya Parishad (education council) yesterday. The final decision will be taken at the management council meeting.

A meeting of Vidya Parishad was held on Saturday under the chairmanship of Dr. Nitin Karmalkar, Vice Chancellor of Savitribai Phule Pune University. When the university administration submitted the fee structure proposal, it was approved. This will increase the fees of subsidized and unsubsidized courses by 5 to 30 per cent. When the university administration made this recommendation a few months ago, it was strongly opposed by the student unions. At that time, the university had said that it was not unfair as the fee was revised after 9 years.

Meanwhile, student unions had demanded that the new fee not be increased in the wake of the Coronavirus outbreak. It was discussed in the meeting. If the fee hike is not revoked, then parents would have to bear the financial loss who are already burdened by lockodown in the backdrop Corona pandemic. Therefore, even if the proposal is approved, many members demanded that it should be given postponed for one year. The university administration has also shown willingness in this regard. Therefore, in 2020-21, institutions will have to charge the same fees as earlier.

In a report published by senior journalist Brijmohan Patil in Sakal newspaper, NS Umrani, Pro-Vice Chancellor, Savitribai Phule Pune University, has been quoted that the university approved a new fee structure proposal. But all students and parents are in trouble because of COVID19 pandemic. Therefore, this new fee structure should be implemented from next year instead of this year, this year the old fees structure will be charged. Such a recommendation has been made to the SPPU Management Council. The final decision will be taken at that meeting of the Management Council.
