No LPG Shortage in Pune, Adequate Gas Cylinder Stock Available: Collector Jitendra Dudi
Reported by Mubarak Ansari
Pune, 12th March 2026: Pune District Collector Jitendra Dudi on Thursday appealed to citizens not to believe rumours about a shortage of domestic LPG cylinders, assuring that there is sufficient stock available in the district and that supply is continuing smoothly.
According to information received from LPG distributors and oil companies operating in the district, adequate stocks of domestic gas cylinders are available and regular supply to consumers is being maintained. The district administration said there is currently no shortage of LPG in Pune.
Dudi stated that the district administration and the District Supply Department are closely monitoring the functioning of all gas agencies. District-level and taluka-level inspection and vigilance teams have been formed to keep a watch on the supply system. He warned that strict legal action will be taken against any distributor found creating artificial shortages, charging higher prices, or engaging in other irregularities.
The administration has also directed that LPG supply should be prioritised for essential services such as hospitals and government hostels for students.
The appeal comes amid concerns arising from the ongoing Iran–Israel conflict, which has triggered speculation about possible disruptions in the supply of domestic and commercial LPG cylinders. However, the Maharashtra state government has implemented several measures to ensure uninterrupted availability of cooking gas.
To prevent disruptions and ensure coordination in case of any potential shortage, the Maharashtra government has decided to establish special district-level committees. These committees will include the District Collector, Superintendent of Police, District Supply Officer and officials from government-run oil companies. Their primary responsibilities will include monitoring the gas supply chain, maintaining law and order related to distribution, and submitting daily reports on stock and supply status.
In the Mumbai–Thane rationing region, a similar committee will be formed under the Controller of Rationing, with the Deputy Commissioner of Police and Deputy Controller (Rationing) as members. The Additional Commissioner of Police (Administration) will coordinate with deputy commissioners across Mumbai and Thane.
Authorities have also been asked to examine the possibility of using alternative fuels such as coal or kerosene if required, while ensuring strict compliance with environmental norms set by the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board. District committees have been directed to hold meetings with hotel and restaurant associations to encourage the use of alternative fuels if necessary.
The government has also decided to prioritise LPG supply to essential institutions such as hospitals, government hostels, government schools and colleges, mid-day meal schemes, and government-run residential schools. A list of such institutions will be prepared and a priority framework will be implemented to ensure uninterrupted supply to these services.
To prevent panic among citizens, authorities have been directed to disseminate accurate information daily through radio, FM channels, television and print media. The Directorate General of Information and Public Relations along with district committees will oversee the communication process. Action will also be taken against the spread of false or misleading information on social media.
Oil companies have been instructed to resolve any technical issues in LPG booking apps and missed-call booking services at the earliest. Control rooms will also be set up at the state, divisional, district and taluka levels to handle complaints, with WhatsApp-based grievance facilities to be introduced for consumers.
Considering upcoming religious festivals and public events, authorities have been directed to ensure uninterrupted LPG supply to public institutions. Local public representatives and gram panchayat members will also assist in spreading accurate information to prevent panic among citizens.
Police authorities have been assigned the responsibility of providing necessary protection to LPG transport vehicles and gas agencies to ensure smooth distribution.
The district administration, rationing authorities and oil companies will submit daily reports on LPG stock and supply to the state-level control room.
Officials also clarified that there is no shortage of domestic LPG in Maharashtra. The state’s daily demand is around 9,000 metric tonnes of LPG. To meet this demand, production at refineries has been increased from about 9,000 metric tonnes per day to around 11,000 metric tonnes in the past two days.
Similarly, adequate supply arrangements have been made for commercial LPG. As per guidelines issued by the central government, priority is being given to essential services such as hospitals, mid-day meal schemes in schools, government residential schools, community kitchens and institutional mess facilities.
Authorities also confirmed that sufficient stocks of piped natural gas (PNG) are available for domestic consumers. In addition, the state currently has adequate reserves of petrol and diesel. Refineries are operating at full capacity to meet daily demand, which is estimated at around 15,000 kilolitres of petrol and 38,000 kilolitres of diesel.
The administration has therefore urged citizens not to panic and assured them that adequate fuel and LPG supplies are available across the state.
