No vehicle movement in Pune from 6 pm today, Jt CP asks policemen not to beat people

Pune, March 23, 2020: After taking stock of the situation in Pune city, Joint Commissioner of Police Ravindra Shisve issued prohibitory order under section 144 CrPC.

As per the order, all vehicles (except those engaged in essential services, media, or authorised by government) shall not ply on any road in Pune from 6 pm today (Monday) till March 31. The order was issued as despite section 144 which prohibits the gathering of more than four persons and people being asked not to step out of home, many people were seen roaming around.

The cops started enforcing no vehicle movement from 3 pm itself and a video of a police officer beating commuters on Sinhgad road went viral. Following this, Jt CP Shisve ordered police officers not to beat people and instead send them home.

To prevent the spread of Coronavirus, section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) has been imposed in all the urban areas of Maharashtra including Pune City and Pimpri Chinchwad from today March 23 till March 31. Section 144 which prohibits the gathering of more than four persons.

The voluntary ‘Janta Curfew’ was from 7 am to 9 pm yesterday followed by the curfew imposed by police till 5 am on March 23.

Pune City Police Commissioner Dr K Venkatesham had earlier tweeted, “Lockdown till 31st March. Stay home pl. Move out of the house only in case of an emergency like groceries, pharmacy, milk, vegetables, chicken in neighbourhood etc..Let break the chain of Corona.”

After Chief Minister Udhav Thackeray yesterday ordered Maharashtra lockdown from Sunday midnight till March 31, Pune police Jt CP Ravindra Shisve and Pimpri-Chinchwad Police Commissioner Sandeep Bishnoi issued 144 orders for their respective jurisdictions. Pune District Collector Naval Kishore Ram issued an order for Pune rural areas.

Now there will be no trains, buses (except city buses for essential services). Only offices, shops engaged in essential services like milk, vegetable, Kirana, medicine, will remain open. Banks and share market will also function. Only five percent of government staffs are working.

Also online food delivery, e-commerce (like Amazon, Flipkart, Big Basket etc) are allowed to operate.

All pre-decided wedding but with only 25 guests.

Also, there should not be many people during cremation.
