Pune, 23rd December 2024: The nylon strings, which are dangerously used for flying kites, have injured two people in Pune over the last two weeks. These incidents occurred in the Swargate and Shivane areas. With Makar Sankranti approaching next month, many people, especially children, are practicing kite flying. Despite being banned, nylon kite strings are being sold illegally.

Pune Police have launched efforts to curb these sales. As in previous years, strict action will be taken against offenders. On 14th January, Maharashtra will celebrate Makar Sankranti, a festival enjoyed enthusiastically by people of all age groups through kite flying. Several areas host kite-flying competitions, where some participants resort to using nylon strings for better performance, despite the ban.

Nylon kite strings (manja) are prohibited in Maharashtra due to their hazardous nature. Coated with glass or metal, these strings pose serious threats to birds, humans, and animals, causing injuries and fatalities. They also endanger the environment and electrical infrastructure. However, many sellers continue to operate under the radar.

Recently, incidents in Swargate and Shivne highlighted the dangers to humans. In response, police are on high alert. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime), Nikhil Pingle, stated, “Due to dangerous kite strings, injuries to pedestrians and bikers can occur. In this context, action will be taken against those selling nylon kite strings. We also urge citizens to avoid using these strings. If any mishap occurs, all involved will face consequences.”
