Narayangaon, 25th May 2023: Farmers in Narayangaon of Pune district expressed their anger by resorting to a unique form of protest after receiving a meager Rs one per kg for their tomatoes yesterday. Frustrated with the low prices, they resorted to throwing tomatoes in the premises of the market committee.

On Wednesday, several farmers arrived at the Narayangaon sub-market center to sell their tomato harvest. However, their hopes were dashed when traders offered them a mere Rs 20 to Rs 40 per crate weighing 20 kg, depending on the tomato grade. Outraged by the disparity between the market prices and the rates they were offered, the farmers decided to take action and threw their tomatoes within the market committee premises.

Market Committee Director Mauli Khandagale, along with Bhaskar Gadge, Santosh Chavan, Priyanka Shelke, former Chairman Raghunath Lende, Santosh Khaire, Market Committee Secretary Rupesh Kawde, and Chetan Rukari, held a meeting with the farmers to address their concerns.

During the morning session at the market committee, a crate of tomatoes weighing 20 kg was priced between Rs 60 and Rs 150. However, the farmers alleged that the rates dropped significantly to Rs 20 to Rs 40 in the afternoon.

In response to the farmers’ grievances, Director Mauli Khandagale warned that traders who engaged in reckless practices would have their licenses revoked. He also emphasized the need for a meeting between farmers and traders to resolve the issue.
