Viman Nagar, 28th April 2026: Residents of Viman Nagar have renewed pressure on the traffic police and civic authorities over the implementation of the one-way traffic system, warning that it should be withdrawn if key compliance measures are not fulfilled.

In response to a legal notice issued on February 5, 2026, representatives of the Viman Nagar Citizens Forum met senior official Himmat Jadhav on Tuesday and submitted a detailed list of demands. The forum has sought time-bound action, stating that the one-way system introduced on November 15, 2025, must be retracted if the issues remain unresolved.

According to the forum, several suggestions had been shared with the Viman Tal Traffic Division since September 2024 through emails and site visits, but were allegedly ignored, prompting the legal notice.

Among the key demands, the forum has called for stable leadership at the Viman Tal Traffic Branch, recommending that a Police Inspector or Assistant Police Inspector be posted for a minimum of two years to ensure continuity in enforcement.

Residents have also demanded strict implementation of parking regulations, including P1/P2 parking on major stretches such as Kailash Market to Datta Mandir and Gangapuram to Datta Mandir, along with enforcement in areas where signboards already exist.

The forum highlighted issues caused by roadside vendors, particularly fruit and vegetable sellers whose vehicles reportedly block roads during unloading. It has sought action to ensure free traffic movement, especially between Datta Mandir and Kailash Market.

To address speeding concerns on the one-way loop, the group has urged the installation of IRC-approved speed breakers on key roads including Skating Rink Road, Neco Garden Road, MHADA Road and Dorabjee Road, in coordination with the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) before the May 15 deadline for road works.

Concerns were also raised over non-functional traffic signals at Dorabjee Chowk, Datta Mandir and Gangapuram Chowk, which residents claim were installed but later switched off. The forum has demanded their activation and the installation of blinkers at Kailash Market.

Further, the group has sought the installation of CCTV cameras at major junctions such as Datta Mandir, Kailash Market and Shrikrishna Chowk to curb violations, including wrong-side driving.

The forum emphasised the need for deployment of traffic police personnel and wardens during peak hours at key junctions to manage congestion, which persists despite the one-way system.

Additional demands include the creation of designated hawker zones by PMC, removal of food stalls causing congestion at CCD Chowk and Neco Garden Road, and implementation of pay-and-park facilities on key roads.

The residents have also urged authorities to regulate parking by high-rise buildings by ensuring use of internal parking spaces, and to strictly enforce no-parking rules on VIP Airport Road to prevent worsening congestion, especially with ongoing metro construction and increasing traffic volume.

The forum further stressed that traffic police must undertake a detailed study to understand why congestion continues at major junctions such as Gangapuram Chowk, Kailash Market Chowk and Datta Mandir Chowk despite the one-way system.

Convenor Qaneez Sukhrani said the current situation reflects gaps in planning and enforcement, adding that public convenience must remain the primary objective of urban traffic management.

Officials have not yet issued a detailed response to the demands.
