‘Orange Alert’ Issued for Kolhapur, Sangli, Satara as Heavy Rain Likely from June 12

Pune, 11th June 2025: After an early onset of the monsoon in Maharashtra this year, nearly 35 years since it last arrived in May, rain activity had briefly weakened in early June. However, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has now predicted renewed rainfall intensity in parts of southern Maharashtra, issuing an Orange Alert for Kolhapur, Sangli, and Satara districts on June 12 and 13.
Heavy rainfall expected in South Maharashtra, says IMD
According to IMD scientist S.D. Sanap, heavy rain is forecast over parts of South Konkan and South-Central Maharashtra over the next two days. “From June 14, the monsoon is expected to regain momentum across the state, with more intense rainfall likely over the Western Ghats and adjoining areas after June 15,” he said.
Bay of Bengal conditions intensify monsoon winds
Sanap explained that a cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal has led to the reactivation of monsoon winds. This change is expected to increase rainfall activity across Maharashtra from June 13 onwards. While Vidarbha and parts of North-Central Maharashtra are still awaiting monsoon arrival, forecasts suggest that these regions will likely receive rains between June 13 and 19.
Key advisory for farmers from Agriculture Department
With the monsoon yet to stabilize across the state, the Agriculture Department has advised farmers to refrain from premature sowing. “Sowing should only be undertaken in areas that have received more than 90 mm of rainfall,” clarified Sanap. “In regions with insufficient rain, farmers should strictly follow guidelines issued by the Agriculture Department.”
