Pune, 11th June 2025: The ongoing strain of the COVID-19 virus circulating in Pune is classified as mild, according to findings shared by scientists from the National Institute of Virology (NIV) during a high-level review meeting with the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).

The update was presented during a special expert briefing chaired by Pune Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram, with senior civic and health officials in attendance. Among those present were Dr. Radhakishan Pawar, Deputy Director of Health Services; Dr. Neena Borade, PMC’s Chief Health Officer; representatives from the National Chemical Laboratory (NCL), and members of the city’s COVID-19 task force.

Genomic sequencing results conducted by NIV indicate that the current variant in circulation exhibits a low virulence profile. While minor symptoms have been reported, particularly in individuals with pre-existing health conditions, the situation is under control with appropriate medical care being provided, Dr. Borade assured.

Following the briefing, Commissioner Ram directed municipal health teams to step up surveillance and care efforts, especially for elderly citizens and high-risk populations, to prevent further spread or complications.
