Pune, 4th April 2025: The Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) Encroachment Department has taken action against 54,237 encroachments across the city between 1st April 2024, and 31st March 2025. Sandip Khalate, Deputy Commissioner of the Encroachment Department informed that in the process, the department collected a total of ₹1.5 crore in fines and fees for the release of seized materials.

The PMC provides designated spots for hawkers and vendors on public spaces and footpaths, granting them official permits and collecting a prescribed fee. However, many vendors continue to operate without authorization, occupying roads and pavements illegally, creating obstructions for pedestrians and traffic alike. The department routinely acts against such offenders, seizing their materials and imposing penalties.

The most intensive phase of enforcement recorded between January and March 2025, with the department removing 9,227 encroachments in January, 5,455 in February, and 5,179 in March. December 2024 also saw significant action, with 6,756 encroachments removed. In the preceding eight months, the monthly average of encroachments removed ranged from 2,000 to 3,000.
