Guwahati, 17th February 2025: Assam Police have officially launched an investigation into the activities of Ali Tauqeer Sheikh, a Pakistani citizen. An FIR (First Information Report) has been registered against Sheikh, accusing him of interfering in India’s internal affairs and making inappropriate comments on matters of Indian Parliament.

The charges are filed under the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), India’s new penal code, and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, indicating the seriousness with which the authorities are treating the case.

The decision to file the FIR came after the Assam state cabinet, under the leadership of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, reviewed Sheikh’s social media activities. The cabinet raised concerns that Sheikh, through his online presence, was attempting to undermine India’s interests. The authorities are particularly interested in understanding the nature of Sheikh’s contact with Elizabeth Gogoi, a British citizen married to Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed the registration of the FIR, stating that it was filed by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) under specific sections of the BNS and the UA(P) Act. He emphasized the government’s commitment to thoroughly investigating the matter.

The police investigation will focus on uncovering the extent of Sheikh’s network both within Assam and across India. Authorities aim to identify any individuals or organizations that might be supporting Sheikh’s alleged agenda. The investigation will also involve collaboration and information sharing between state and central government agencies.

The state government has highlighted Assam’s historical vulnerability to destabilizing activities orchestrated by Pakistani actors, both state and non-state. According to a government official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, Assam has been a target for such activities, making vigilance and strong action essential.

In response to the FIR, Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi has publicly refuted the allegations, dismissing them as politically motivated and without merit. Gogoi characterized the accusations as baseless, suggesting they are a diversionary tactic.

The unfolding investigation has already ignited a political debate, with accusations exchanged between the ruling BJP and the opposition Congress. The outcome of this probe is expected to have significant ramifications for national security and the political environment in Assam.
