‘Parikrama’ a mega dance festival to present blend of different styles of classical dance
Pune, November 29, 2018 : Puneites are about to experience a unique blend of different classical dancing styles along with knowing about the art from legendary dance maestros. Kalavardhini Charitable Trust in association with Maharashtra Education Society and Bajaj Trust has organized ‘Parikrama’ a mega festival of dance with a theme- ‘A journey that never ends’.
The festival in its 10th edition will mark 70th birthday of Bharatnatyam Guru Dr. Sucheta Bhide-Chapekar. It will also celebrate 30 years of Kalavardhini. The dance fiesta will be held from December 6 to December 9 at Renuka Swaroop School Ground in Sadashiv Peth. Entry to the festival is free for all. The information is given by Arundhati Patwardhan of Kalavardhini Charitable Trust in a press conference held in Pune today. Dr. Sucheta Chapekar was present among the dignitaries.
First day of the four day fest (Thursday, December 6) will start at 6pm at Renuka Swaroop Ground with ‘Abhishtachintan’- felicitation of Dr. Sucheta Chapekar on her 70th birthday at the hands of Pt. Hridaynath Mangeshkar, veteran Musitian. After that, an English translation of ‘Nrityatmika’- a book written by Dr. Chapekar will be released. Some Part of ‘Vyomagami’- a documentry by Amruta Mahadik depicting Dr. Chapekar’s work in the field of dance will also be shown. The peak moment of the first day will be performance of Dr. Sucheta Chapekar in which she will present Bharatnatyam and Nrityaganga.
On the 2nd day (Friday, December 7), dance enthusiasts will get a chance to witness performances of 4 veteran Indian classical dancers. This session named ‘Abhivyakti’ will be conducted at 6pm at Renuka Swaroop Ground. Masters of dance Prof. C. V. Chandra Shekhar (Bharatnatyam), Dr. Kanak Rele (Mohiniattam), Darshana Jhaveri (Manipuri) and Sunayana Hajarilal (Kathak) will present glimpses of their dance traditions. These Gurus will be interviewed by Ashish Khokar, dance historian.
On the same day, renowned dancers of Manasvee group- Sharwari Jamenis, Prajakta Raj and Manisha Abhay will present a Kathak performance in the event named ‘Arghyam’. Following that, Kalavardhini group- Rama Kuknur, Vrushali Chitale, Prajakta Pavnaskar, Manasi Jog, Vaishali Tonk and Arundhati Patwardhan will present ‘Nrityaganga’.
On the 3rd day (Saturday, December 8) Dr. Sucheta Chapekar will be in conversation with Dr. Sunil Kothari, Senior most dance critic and Author. These seniors through their conversation will unfold the journey of classical dance from 1960s to the current era. This event will also be held at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan at 10am It is free and open to all dance lovers. On the same day, at Renuka Swaroop Groung, an event named ‘Tridhara’ is organized at 6pm. In this event, 3 multi faceted senior dancers Vidya Subramaniyan, Indira Kadambi and Lavanya Anant will present Bharatnatyam.
The day 4 (Sunday, December 9) will see the recitals from different artists who will explain about the process of creating new compositions for classical dance. This session will start at 10am at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan. Famous dancers like Parimal Phadke (Bharatnatyam), Shashwati Gharai Ghosh (Oddissi) and Ameera Patankar (Kathak) will participate in this session named as ‘Trividha’.
In the evening Puneites will get a chance to witness a grand Bharatnatyam dance-drama production ‘Don Quixote’. This performance is based on a Spanish novel which will be presented by Shrijeet Krishna and his Sahrdaya Troupe. This unique dance-drama performance will be presented at Renuka Swaroop School Ground at 6pm.
