Pimpri-Chinchwad, 4th December 2023: In a decisive move to curb pollution in the Indrayani River, the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) and the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) have issued closure notices to two companies found guilty of contaminating the river waters.

Following an inspection near the river, officials uncovered two businesses dumping contaminated water into a stream linked to the Indrayani River. Prompted by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s directives to address pollution concerns before the Kartiki Wari festivities, swift action was taken by authorities to prevent further environmental degradation.

The MPCB has not only sanctioned closure notices but also issued warnings to other nearby industrial units, sternly cautioning against the release of polluted water into the river. Severe consequences were threatened should any establishment flout these regulations.

Expressing concern over multiple industrial units in Kudalwadi and Jadhavwadi found in violation of environmental protocols, PCMC officials vowed to ensure the complete elimination of pollution under their jurisdiction. Additionally, the observed foam in the river has been attributed to water released from dams ahead of the Kartiki Wari.

However, challenges persist as the Jadhavwadi Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) remains incomplete under the PCMC’s purview. Despite this setback, PCMC officials reassured that the STP’s construction is nearing completion and will soon commence operations. Areas equipped with operational STPs have effectively prevented the release of untreated water.
