Pimpri, 7th November 2023: With the festival of Diwali only four days away, the streets of Pimpri Camp, the main market of the city, are bustling with shoppers eager to make their festive purchases. Pimpri, known for its competitive prices in comparison to Pune, has become a magnet for residents of the city and its neighbouring areas.

The city of Pimpri-Chinchwad is rapidly expanding, with growth in all directions and the development of significant housing societies. The city’s population has swelled to 27 lakhs. Pimpri Camp stands as the largest wholesale and retail market, offering a vast array of goods, from groceries and jewellery to clothing, toys, household items, and electrical materials. As a result, not only city residents but also small shopkeepers from nearby towns like Lonavala, Kamshet, Vadgaon Maval, and Talegaon Dabhade are drawn to Pimpri Camp for their shopping needs. Additionally, farmers from surrounding areas such as Charholi, Dudulgaon, Moshi, Chikhali, Ravet, Kiwale, Mamurdi, and Wakad flock to the market in the mornings to sell fresh produce. The presence of a flower market further adds to the bustling atmosphere, contributing to increased traffic.

One of the key attractions of Pimpri’s market is its competitive pricing. Business in Pimpri operates on high turnover, in contrast to the fixed profit model of Pune. This difference in pricing has enticed citizens to start flocking to Pimpri Camp for their Diwali shopping. The market gets particularly crowded in the evening, making it challenging to navigate the area. As a result, traffic jams have become a common occurrence, necessitating the deployment of traffic police to manage the situation.

To meet the growing demand, established textile businesses from Pune have expanded their operations to Pimpri. Reputed textile businessmen have opened large shops in the city, drawing in shoppers with their diverse offerings.

Prabhu Jodhwani, President of the Pimpri Garment Merchants Association, said, “Business in Pimpri runs on turnover. Therefore, materials are available at a lower price compared to Pune. The wholesale market is evolving. All items are available in Pimpri. So small traders come to buy. Citizens of the suburbs also come to Pimpri for shopping.”
