Pimpri: Elderly Woman Duped of Rs 1.14 Crore by Online Fraudsters Posing as Police Officers

Pimpri, 30th November 2024: An elderly woman was duped of Rs 1.14 crore by fraudsters pretending to be police officers. The incident, which occurred between October 21 and November 29 in Sangvi, involved the victim being threatened with arrest in connection to a financial fraud case of Rs 2 crore.
The victim, a retired senior employee of a private company, has filed a complaint with the Cyber Police Station in Pimpri. Following the complaint, a case has been registered against account holders at Bandhan, HDFC, and ICICI banks, as part of the ongoing investigation.
According to the victim, the accused contacted her through multiple mobile numbers and WhatsApp, posing as senior police officers. They claimed to be from the Mumbai Police and introduced themselves under various aliases. The fraudsters warned the victim that there were 17 serious complaints filed against her mobile number and threatened her with arrest if she did not comply.
In a bid to intimidate her further, the scammers informed the victim that Naresh Goyal, allegedly involved in the case, was receiving a commission of Rs 20 lakh per month, which amounted to 10 percent of the Rs 2 crore financial fraud. Under the constant threat of arrest, the woman was coerced into transferring a sum of Rs 1 crore 14 lakh 20,188 into various bank accounts controlled by the fraudsters.
The Cyber Police are now investigating the case and have urged the public to be vigilant against such scams, especially those involving impersonation of police officers.
