PM Narendra Modi Unveils Indian Textiles And Crafts Repository Portal On National Handloom Day

New Delhi, 7th August 2023: On Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Indian Textiles and Crafts Repository Portal during the National Handloom Day celebrations held at Delhi’s Bharat Mandapam. Addressing the event, PM Modi highlighted how India’s vibrant handloom tradition symbolizes the nation’s rich diversity and urged everyone to embrace and promote locally-made products.
The event took place at Bharat Mandapam, a recently inaugurated venue that showcases the fusion of ancient and modern aspects of India, defining the country’s identity today. PM Modi emphasized that the Swadeshi movement commenced on this auspicious day, which prompted the government to commemorate it as National Handloom Day.
PM Modi expressed concern that after India gained independence, not enough attention was given to strengthening the cloth industry, particularly Khadi, which had thrived during the previous century. He noted that Khadi wearers were unjustly stigmatized with an inferiority complex, and thus, the revitalization of the textile sector is vital to the country’s progress.
The Prime Minister pointed out the emergence of the “neo-middle class,” which offers significant opportunities for textile companies. He underscored the country’s collective aspiration to eradicate corruption, dynasty politics, and appeasement politics.
The newly launched e-portal, known as the Repository of Textiles and Crafts, was developed by the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) and aims to showcase the rich heritage and diverse artistry of Indian textiles and crafts.
The celebration saw the participation of over 3000 handloom and khadi weavers, artisans, and stakeholders from the textile and MSME sectors, reflecting the importance of promoting and supporting these traditional industries in India.
