PMC Sanctions Rs 145 Crore for Road Upgrades in Pune Ahead of International Cycling Event

Pune, 9th September 2025: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has approved a budget of Rs 145.75 crore to revamp city roads for the upcoming ‘Pune Grand Challenge Tour’, an international cycling competition modeled on the Tour de France. The event is scheduled for January 2026 and will feature a 684-kilometer route, with 75 kilometers running through Pune city.

According to the proposal cleared by the Municipal Corporation’s Estimate Committee, the funds will be used for asphalting, repairing chambers and pedestrian pathways, and removing encroachments along the designated cycling route.

‘World-Class Roads for World-Class Event’
Roads Department Head Aniruddha Pawaskar said the preparations would meet international standards. “For this world-class competition, the quality of roads in Pune will be upgraded to international standards. The aim is to complete all the works in two to three months,” he said.

Project Divided into Four Packages
The road works have been divided into four packages:
Package 1: 9.47 km – Rs 30.80 crore
Package 2: 28.53 km – Rs 32.67 crore
Package 3: 14.32 km – Rs 38.22 crore
Package 4: 22.47 km – Rs 44.05 crore

Cycling Route Through Pune
The approved cycling route will pass through several major city roads and landmarks, including:
Balewadi–Sus–Pashan–Pune University–Raj Bhavan Marg–SB Road–Deccan–Shivajinagar–Jangali Maharaj Road (28 km)

Karve Road–Nalstop–Vanaj Corner–Mhatre Bridge (8.5 km)
Shastri Road–Tilak Road–Shaniwarwada–Sarasbagh–Nehru Road–Lal Mahal (2.3 km)
Pune Cantonment–Race Course–Ambedkar Chowk–Zilla Parishad (8.2 km)
East Street–Lulla Nagar–Kondhwa–Bopdev Ghat (12.8 km)
Khadakwasla–Kolewadi–Nanded City (5 km)

Boost for Pune’s Global Profile
Officials believe the event will not only showcase Pune on the global sporting map but also leave behind improved infrastructure for citizens. The challenge for the civic administration will be to ensure the works are completed within the short time frame before the international participants arrive.
