Pune, 30th October 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) Standing Committee has approved a proposal to preserve the historical legacy of the Poona Pact and install a full-size statue of Bharat Ratna Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar in Pune. The proposal was moved by corporator and Standing Committee member Suhas Vijay Tingre and will now be placed before the PMC General Body for approval.

According to Tingre, the initiative aims to preserve the historical significance of the Poona Pact, an important milestone in India’s social and political history, and ensure that its legacy reaches future generations.

Tingre said the proposal envisages preserving historical documents related to the Poona Pact and giving impetus to the concept of a memorial and museum dedicated to the historic event. It also seeks to create awareness among younger generations about the circumstances and significance of the agreement.

The Poona Pact holds considerable significance in India’s history, particularly in the context of social equality, political representation and the rights of marginalised communities.

Memorial and museum to preserve historical legacy

According to Tingre, preserving the history of the Poona Pact is essential to helping future generations understand its historical importance and the ideas associated with it.

He said the proposal also includes the installation of a full-size statue of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar as a mark of respect for his contribution to the country.

Tingre emphasised that the ideals of equality, liberty, fraternity and social justice advocated by Dr Ambedkar need to reach every section of society. He said initiatives of this nature would help preserve Pune’s historical heritage while promoting awareness about the contributions and thoughts of great social reformers.

Proposal to be placed before PMC General Body

With the Standing Committee approving the proposal, the next step is to place it before the PMC General Body for consideration and approval.

Tingre said the committee’s approval marks an important step towards preserving the legacy of the Poona Pact and honouring Dr Ambedkar. Further administrative proceedings will follow if the proposal receives approval from the General Body.
