Pune, 9th June 2023: Over the past month, the frequency of breakdowns among Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) buses has significantly increased, with an average of 61 breakdown incidents reported daily. In comparison, the city witnessed an average of 21 breakdowns per day in January this year.

Official data reveals that May 11 marked the highest number of breakdown incidents, with a staggering 136 reported in a single day. Interestingly, a significant portion of the affected buses were owned by contractors. PMPML officials state that out of the daily average of 61 breakdowns, 38 were attributed to contractor-owned buses, while the remaining 23 belonged to PMPML.

This surge in breakdown incidents has been observed in recent months. In January, the average daily breakdown was 21, which increased to 30 in February and further rose to 54 in April. It is noteworthy that despite the lower number of breakdowns in January, PMPML witnessed the highest number of passengers using their services in the past five months.

The rise in breakdowns poses a significant challenge for PMPML, affecting the reliability and efficiency of public transportation in Pune.
