Policeman’s son arrested for beating engineer with stumps

Pune, March 26, 2019 : The son of a retired policeman has been arrested for allegedly assaulting an engineer with cricket stump and boulder in Mohammadwadi on March 24.

The 23-year-old complainant from Kondhwa, works as design engineer with a private company. The arrested accused has been identified as fitness model Sagar Pandey, a resident of Heaven Park area, Mohammadwadi. They were playing cricket when the incident took place.

As per the FIR registered with Wanowrie police station, the incident took place around 10 am on March 24 (Sunday) in Heaven Park, where they were playing cricket. “While playing cricket, I asked the team to give the second over (to me). So Sagar started abusing me. To which, I asked him not to give bad words cause we don’t come from such an environment. He came towards me and pushed me. I pushed him away as he was pouncing on me. He went behind, picked a big rock and threw it on me and picked up the stumps and started hitting me. I and others tried to stop him, but he also warned them that he would hurt them. His friend named Satnam Singh grabbed me with his arms around my neck and tried choking me while Sagar was hitting with the stumps. I tried to stop the fight but he was hitting me with the stump on my head and my back. He was threatened to create problems for me if I register a complaint as his father is a policeman. He told me that he has committed a ‘half murder’ and threats to kill me on the spot and in future. His friend was also holding the stumps and supporting him. Sagar said that he has been in jail and is not afraid to commit a crime. He tried to press my neck hard. All the scars and marks can be seen on my hand, back and neck which is proof of how hard I have been beaten”, the FIR states.

The complainant had approached the police immediately but it could be registered only 12 hours later. The local residents said that accused Pandey drives a car with ‘Police’ sticker on it.

A delegation led by youth activist Mohammad Saif petitioned the Police Commissioner Dr K Venkatesham on Monday, about Pandey flaunting police connection to harass residents and shopkeepers of the area. The commissioner has instructed senior officers to take action against him.

The accused was arrested for offences under sections 324 (voluntarily causing hurt), 504 (intentional insult) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
