Pune, 13th February 2025: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has announced a strict ban on the production and immersion of Plaster of Paris (POP) idols, in compliance with revised environmental regulations.

The decision comes following a High Court directive issued on January 30, instructing all municipal corporations and district collectors to enforce a complete prohibition on POP idols as per the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) guidelines.

The directive was issued after a public interest litigation (PIL) was filed in the High Court, raising concerns about the harmful effects of POP on water bodies and the environment. In response, Additional Commissioner Prithviraj B.P. has ordered strict implementation of the ban, warning that any violations during festivals and celebrations will invite legal action under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986.

Under the new regulations, idol makers and festival organizers must adhere to the following guidelines:

Eco-friendly materials only – Idols must be made from natural, biodegradable, and environmentally friendly materials.
Ban on POP idols – The production and immersion of POP idols are strictly prohibited.
Artificial ponds for immersion – Idols must be immersed in designated artificial ponds or idol collection centers.
Safe colors – Only biodegradable, non-toxic, and natural colors can be used for painting idols.
Prohibition on chemical paints – The use of toxic chemical colors, oil paints, and artificial dyes is strictly banned.
Eco-friendly puja materials – Worship materials such as flowers and clothes must be biodegradable.
Sustainable utensils – Glass or metal plates and bowls should be used instead of plastic for food distribution.
Ban on plastic usage – Single-use plastic plates and other plastic materials are not allowed for food donations.
Natural ornamentation – Dried flower components, straw, and similar biodegradable materials should be used for decorating idols.

The municipal corporation has urged citizens, idol makers, and festival organizers to strictly follow these eco-friendly measures to protect the environment and ensure sustainable celebrations. Authorities have warned that non-compliance will lead to strict legal action.

This move is expected to have a significant impact on Ganeshotsav and other festivals, as POP idols have been widely used in the past. However, environmentalists have welcomed the decision, emphasizing that it will help reduce water pollution and ecological damage caused by non-biodegradable idol immersions.
