Potato Prices Dip in Pune’s Market Yard Amid Surge in Supply

Pune, 6th July 2025: Potato prices witnessed a noticeable drop in Pune’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Market Yard on Sunday due to increased arrivals from various regions, according to wholesale traders. A total of 40 to 45 trucks of potatoes from Indore, Agra, and local sources reached the wholesale market, leading to a surplus and subsequent price correction.

Senior trader Vilas Bhujbal confirmed that while potato prices declined, the rates of most other fruits and vegetables remained stable. Around 80 to 90 trucks loaded with fruits and vegetables arrived at the yard, maintaining the supply-demand balance in other categories.

From outside Maharashtra, arrivals included 3-4 tempos of cabbage from Karnataka and Gujarat, 3-4 tempos of drumsticks from Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, 3 tempos of peas from Himachal Pradesh, and several loads of mangoes, garlic, and carrots from Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat.

Within the Pune division, the market received significant quantities of vegetables such as 400–500 sacks of sattari, 6–7 tempos each of okra and cluster beans, 8,000–10,000 boxes of tomatoes, and multiple tempos of green and dhobli chillies, cucumbers, pumpkins, and leafy greens. Additionally, 75–80 trucks of onions arrived in the market.

While the potato and spinach prices dropped, a decline in the supply of leafy vegetables like cilantro, onion leaves, and karadi led to a price rise. On Sunday, the market received one lakh bundles of cilantro and 60,000 bundles of fenugreek.

Current wholesale prices of leafy greens are: coriander ₹1,000–₹2,000, fenugreek ₹100–₹1,500, shepu ₹800–₹1,200, onion leaves ₹1,000–₹1,800, chakwat and karadi ₹500–₹800, mint ₹500–₹1,000, and ambadi ₹400–₹700.

Meanwhile, in the fruit market, pomegranate prices saw an uptick due to decreased supply. Other fruit prices remained stable, with arrivals including 30–40 tonnes of mosambi, 1.5 tonnes of oranges, 25 tonnes of papaya, and 5 trucks of pineapples from Kerala.
