Pune, 12th July 2021: A group of a young and dynamic team of social entrepreneurs started a project named Urja initiated by Tree Foundation. Their aim is to provide free electricity in remote tribal villages around Pune district in the next six months. The team has identified more than 10 tribal villages that lack access to electricity.

More than 10 organizations have joined hands to generate electricity and bring light to the people in Khopde wadi village near Pune. All selected locations have waterfall available in the nearby hills which provides the potential for hydropower generation. This will provide a sustainable source of electricity to the villages throughout the year.

Lack of electricity is affecting access to water into the village. The pump available for the village well doesn’t work due to scarcity of electricity. Villagers are losing out on employment and economic opportunities due to the unavailability of electric power. This project will benefit households, schools, and public areas. The action plan will cover suitable technologies for providing the settlements with access to electricity.

The lead partners of this project are TREEi Innovative Foundation, Kirloskar Brother Limited is providing the needed technical expertise and technical quality management. Other than this Rotary Club Of Pune Metro, VertexX Inc Pvt. Ltd, RED FM, RISO Band ISEED, Nirjara Group and United Nations are supporting the change.

Ketaki Takale, Co-Founder of VertexX Inc Pvt. Ltd said, “The world keeps changing every day and this change is meant for good. The people from rural and tribal parts of India are entitled to a good change and a better lifestyle. Electricity can play a major factor in that. Mission URJA is an attempt for this positive change. Join hands for betterment.”
