Pune, 16th December 2022: The number of measles patients in Maharashtra has increased gradually over the last month, especially in Mumbai. 11 children have been found infected with measles in some densely populated areas of Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).

In densely populated areas like Bhawani Peth, Lohianagar, and Kondhwa of Pune city, 11 children are infected with measles.

Measles patients initially have a fever, red rash on the body, and red eyes. These symptoms appear seven to 10 days after the measles virus enters the body. Initially, the symptoms are only fever and cough, cold, and red eyes, gradually increasing and within two to four days, a rash appears all over the body. It spreads behind the ears, face, chest, and abdomen. If proper precautions are taken at this stage, complications of the disease can be reduced. However, even after measles is cured, anaemia and reduced immunity are common in children for some time. The Measles Control Action Team has clarified that to prevent this, it is necessary to provide children with vitamin A and nutritious meals.

Assistant Health Officer of Pune Municipal Corporation, Dr Suryakant Deokar, said Measles affected children are mainly in densely populated areas like Kondhwa, Lohianagar, and Bhawani Peth. The Municipal Health Department has completed a survey of children deprived of measles vaccination. The measles vaccine is being given to small children. Children who have been vaccinated earlier are also being vaccinated again in this campaign.

State Measles Action Task Force Member and Senior Pediatrician Dr Pramod Jog said until the vaccination rate reaches the pre-corona vaccination rate, it is not appropriate to ignore the symptoms of viral diseases in children. Children who receive both doses of the measles vaccine are 97 per cent protected from the disease.
