Pune: 13-year-old boy commits suicide after being stopped from watching cartoon on TV

Pune, June 10, 2020: A 13-year-old boy allegedly hanged himself after he was asked by his family not to watch the cartoon serial on television. The incident took place yesterday (June 9) afternoon in Bibvewadi after the television was switched off when he was watching cartoon serial, Pune city police said.

According to Bibvewadi police station, under whose jurisdiction the incident took place, the teenager used a scarf for the hanging. The incident took place around 2 pm in Rajiv Gandhi Nagar locality of Bibvewadi. As per the statement of the family members given to police, the boy studied in class seventh and has been at home due to lockdown. He was short-tempered and had attempted suicide in the past also. He used to watch cartoon serials continuously for hours. His parents who are folk performers, siblings and grandmother often asked him to not watch television for so long. 

  

Police officials said that on Tuesday he was watching television since morning. His parents told him many times to switch off the TV but he didn’t. And when his sister switched off the television, he went upstairs. When he didn’t return for long, his mother went to see him and found him hanging in the loft. The boy was rushed to a nearby hospital where a doctor declared him dead on arrival. The family returned home with his body. However, the police learnt about the incident and reached the spot. They took the body to Sassoon General Hospital where a post mortem was conducted around 5 pm.

Police have registered a case of accidental death (AD) until the investigation is completed. Police Sub Inspector Kiran Lite is further investigating the case.
