Lonavala, 28th January 2024: A 20-year-old student from a medical college in Ahmednagar’s Loni area lost his life to drowning in the waters of Pavana dam near Thakursai village on Friday evening.

The victim, identified as Manish Shankar Sharma (20) from Mumbai, was accompanied by his classmate, Aditya Bundele (20) of Nagpur, who was rescued by vigilant residents of the area.

According to Inspector Kishor Dhumal of the Lonavla (rural) police, the tragedy unfolded as four students entered the water in the evening, while others enjoyed the surroundings on the banks. After a while, two students emerged from the water, but Sharma and Bundele, despite having swimming skills, found themselves in distress. As they struggled to stay afloat, the alarm was raised by their fellow students witnessing the incident.

Bundele was rescued by the locals. However, Sharma could not be saved.

The students were part of a group from the medical college who had come for picnic on Republic Day under guidance of a professor.
