Pune 25th August 2023: The Pune Municipal Corporation has initiated a program to control the population of stray cats in the city. Under this program, a total of 2966 stray cats have been sterilised by the civic body officials in the past year.

The organisations permitted by the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI), have been invited to actively participate in this initiative. They are involved in providing essential facilities for the sterlisation process. They are responsible for capturing and sterlising the cats, followed by administering anti-rabies vaccines and releasing them in the designated locations with tags.

The health department initiated the bidding process for this initiative in 2020. However, due to the substantial cost stipulated by AWBI and the direct expenses for the entire sterlisation process, no organizations participated. Subsequently, the municipal corporation re-invited the bids and appointed an organization for the job. From September 2022 to August 24, 2023, a total of 2966 stray cats have been sterilised under this program.
