Pimpri, 24th December 2022: The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation’s (PCMC) Tax Collection Department has intensified their seizure campaign against defaulters. It has come to light during the seizure campaign in various parts of the city that the owners of mobile towers owe as much as Rs 65 crore.

In the city, there are 916 authorised mobile towers and 30 unauthorised towers. Unauthorised tower holders have applied to the Municipal Corporation for permission.

5.88 lakh properties are enrolled in Pimpri-Chinchwad city. The municipality is responsible for collecting taxes on these properties. In the fiscal year 2022-23, the tax collection department has set a goal of Rs 1,000 crores. The tax collection department has started a vigorous effort to recover the dues. Large-scale confiscation operations have also been started to fulfil the target of one thousand crores. However, it has come to light that 916 owners of mobile towers in the city owe 65 crores and 48 lakhs, or 10% of their dues.

Last year, the city’s tax collection department launched a tower confiscation campaign to collect dues from 916 mobile tower owners. 35 to 40 towers were confiscated at that time. However, the owners of the tower filed a complaint against this confiscation with the High Court.

The municipality has been instructed by the court not to take any action against the owners of mobile towers, such as confiscation. Since the case is pending in court, it is challenging to collect the tax from tower owners.

However, Assistant Commissioner of Taxation and Tax Collection Nilesh Deshmukh informed that Rs 22 crores 28 lakh rupees, including penalty tax, had been recovered during the fiscal year 2022-23.

The municipality is in a quandary because the court order prevents them from taking action like confiscation.

Pimpri-Chinchwad city is expanding from all directions. As a result, the city’s mobile tower count is steadily rising. The city currently has 916 mobile towers. Bhosari has the most towers, 102, followed by Sangvi with 98, Chikhli with 77, Nigdi Pradhikaran with 74, Akurdi with 73, Chinchwad with 71, and Charholi with only 20.

In the city, 916 mobile towers are authorised, but 30 towers are unauthorised. These unapproved tower holders have applied to the building permit department of the municipality for authorization. Rs one lakh fine is being imposed on these tower holders.

According to Deputy Engineer Rajendra Dumbare, permission is given to erect the tower only on the official building.
