Pimpri Chinchwad, 31st January 2025:A 36-year-old man from the Pimple Gurav area of Pimpri-Chinchwad has died from complications related to Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) and pneumonia, according to Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation’s (PCMC) Medical Officer of Health, Laxman Gophane.

The man passed away on 30th January after being diagnosed with GBS on 21st January. He had been undergoing treatment at Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial (YCM) Hospital in Sant Tukaram Nagar, Pimpri. He later developed pneumonia, which led to respiratory failure due to the combined effects of GBS and pneumonia, as reported by the committee formed to investigate the death.

This marks the second GBS-related fatality in the area, following the death of a 67-year-old woman on 25th January who had been undergoing treatment for two and a half months. Health officials had previously claimed her death was not directly caused by GBS.

To date, 13 cases of GBS have been reported in Pimpri Chinchwad City, with some patients recovering and others still undergoing treatment.

PCMC has established a 24-hour helpline (7758933017) to provide information and address public concerns about GBS. Medical experts will be available round the clock to answer queries.

GBS is a rare neurological disorder in which the body’s immune system attacks the peripheral nerves, potentially leading to muscle weakness and paralysis. Health authorities are closely monitoring the situation and urging residents to seek medical attention if they experience any symptoms associated with the condition.
