Pune: 55 players for PYC CHESS LEAGUE 2023

Pune, 30th June 2023: A total of 55 players will represent 7 teams in the PYC CHESS LEAGUE that will be organised by the PYC Hindu Gymkhana and will be played at PYC Chess Hall on 1st and 2nd July 2023.

“We at the PYC host various leagues in different sports. For the first time, we are hosting a chess league for its members,” Mr. Kumar Tamhane, President of PYC Hindu Gymkhana said.

“We already host five leagues in cricket, badminton, football and carom. We prioritize health and recreation of the members. A Chess league will provide another platform for our members to come together and bond over a sport,” Mr. Sarang Lagu, secretary of the club said.

The players were selected via auction. Param Jalan (Marattha Warriors, ₹46,000), Rohit Deval (Kings 64, ₹45,000), Nikhil Chitale (Nok99 Navigators, ₹41,000) and Vijay Ogale (Goldfieldd Triedents, ₹37,000) were the top picks. The event will be sponsored by Mr.Kapil Trimal of Seven Realty.

The seven teams are: Goldfieldd Triedents (owned by Anil Chhajed), Kings 64 (owned by Pravin Bhalerao), Maratha Warriors (Shirish Gandhi), Nok 99 Navigators (Ashish Desai), Wadeshwar Wizards (Swanand Bhave), 7 Knights (Kapil Trimal), and Golden Kings (Niranjan Godbole).

Rules for the tournament:

– 7 match round robin format to be played according to pairings. Total six boards will play.

– Team with White pieces (Board 1, 3, 5 will play white and board 2, 4, 6 will play Black); Team with Black pieces (Board 1, 3, 5 will play black and board 2,4,6 will play white)

– Top two teams will qualify for the final. (Colour to be decided by a toss).

– Rate of play: 15 minutes + 10 seconds per move.

A tournament committee comprising of Amod Pradhan, Shirish Sathe has been formed for the smooth conduct of the event.
