New Delhi, 1st July 2023: Shreyanka Patil, a talented young offspinner, has made history by becoming the first Indian cricketer to participate in the Women’s Caribbean Premier League (WCPL). She has been signed by the Amazon Warriors team, marking a significant milestone in her career.

Shreyanka’s exceptional performance in the Emerging Asia Cup 2023 in Hong Kong for India A brought her into the spotlight. She was named the player of the tournament for her outstanding achievement of taking nine wickets in just two matches, helping her team clinch the championship by defeating Bangladesh A in the final.

Earlier this year, the 20-year-old was recruited by the Royal Challengers Bangalore for the inaugural Women’s Premier League (WPL) held in March. Her participation in the WCPL before making her international debut further establishes her as a trailblazer, being the first Indian cricketer to feature in an overseas league.

Shreyanka joins a distinguished group of Indian women cricketers who have played in overseas T20 leagues. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has granted permission to its contracted women players to participate in international leagues outside of India. This opportunity has been seized by notable players such as Harmanpreet Kaur, Smriti Mandhana, Jemima Rodrigues, Shafali Verma, Deepti Sharma, and Richa Ghosh, who have showcased their skills in tournaments like the Women’s Big Bash League, The Hundred, and the Women’s Cricket Super League.

The WCPL is scheduled to commence on August 31 in Barbados, with the final set to take place on September 10 in Trinidad. The tournament is set to showcase star-studded teams consisting of the finest players hailing from the Caribbean. Esteemed individuals such as Deandra Dottin, Hayley Matthews, and Stafanie Taylor are among the renowned names that will grace the event. In addition to the Caribbean players, there will also be overseas talents from Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Ireland, and India, with esteemed international cricketers participating in the expanded Massy WCPL.

Some of the notable international players gracing the 2023 Massy WCPL include New Zealanders Sophie Devine, Suzie Bates, and Fran Jonas, as well as Australians Laura Harris and Amanda-Jade Wellington. South Africans Dane van Niekerk, Mignon de Preez, and Shabnim Ismail will also be showcasing their skills at the event.

The 2023 season of WCPL promises an expanded schedule, featuring seven matches to be played in Barbados and Trinidad. The three teams competing in this edition are the Barbados Royals, Guyana Amazon Warriors, and the Trinbago Knight Riders.
