Pune, 23rd May 2023: In a bid to enhance road safety and curb the rising number of road accidents, a helmet enforcement operation will be conducted in Pune for three consecutive days, starting tomorrow. To ensure the effective implementation of this initiative, 600 additional traffic police personnel have been appointed. The decision to conduct the operation has been made under the orders of the District Collector.

Previously, traffic police would stop motorbike riders at intersections and enforce helmet usage by standing on the road. However, due to opposition in Pune, the enforcement action in these areas has been halted. Presently, helmet enforcement is primarily carried out through the use of CCTV cameras.

On Wednesday, May 24, Pune will observe “Symbolic Helmet Day” as part of efforts to raise public awareness about helmet usage. Additionally, strict action will be taken against bike riders who fail to wear helmets in front of major government offices across the city.

District Collector Rajesh Deshmukh had urged for the celebration of “Symbolic Helmet Day” on May 24 to promote awareness regarding the importance of helmets, as two-wheelers are frequently involved in road accidents. As a first step, government officials and employees have been encouraged to wear helmets.

Deputy Commissioner of Police, Vijay Kumar Magar, stated that as per the order from District Collector Rajesh Deshmukh, initial efforts will focus on creating public awareness and encouraging all officials and employees visiting government offices to wear helmets. Strict action will also be taken against bike riders found without helmets.

To facilitate this initiative, existing traffic police officers and employees have been assigned to the areas surrounding government offices. The objective is to ensure compliance with helmet usage and enhance the safety of motorbike riders.
