Pune: 601 School Bus Drivers Penalized; RTO Acts Against Unsafe School Transport
Pune, 13th December 2024: An ongoing inspection campaign by the Regional Transport Office (RTO) has revealed widespread violations of safety regulations by drivers transporting school students. From January to November, 1,503 vehicles were inspected, and fines amounting to ₹21.99 lakh were collected from 601 drivers found flouting rules.
The intensified campaign follows a recent incident in Kharadi where a school bus caught fire, raising concerns about the safety of students. In response, the RTO has ramped up inspections to ensure compliance with traffic regulations mandated by the state government.
During these inspections, officials are scrutinizing vehicle fitness certificates, driving licenses, pollution control certificates (PUC), fire-fighting equipment, first-aid kits, and adherence to passenger limits. Special attention is being given to window grills, stair designs, and the presence of fire extinguishers. For CNG vehicles, the CNG fitness certificate is also being verified.
“Ensuring the safety of school students is our priority. We urge all drivers and vehicle operators to strictly follow the rules,” said Swapnil Bhosale, Deputy Regional Transport Officer.
