Pune: 66-Year-Old Detained Under POCSO Act For Lewd Comments And Inappropriate Actions With Minor Girls
Pune, 29th November 2022: On the grounds of a prominent housing society in the city, a senior citizen was detained on suspicion of insulting the modesty of two young girls. Sudipto Chakravarty, a 66-year-old man, was employed by society as a swimming and gym instructor. He has also been charged with violating the applicable provisions of the POCSO Act, which prohibits sexual offences against children.
The girls, who are 12 and 15 years old, live in the community and frequently workout outside in the open gym. The girls’ 42-year-old mother filed a complaint with the Chandan Nagar police station, alleging that the first incident occurred last year and that there were subsequent incidents in August and October of this year. However, out of fear, the sisters chose not to describe what happened.
The 12-year-old victim was playing in the open gym when the accused grabbed her improperly and said lewd things, the complainant, a doctor, informed the police. Later, as her 15-year-old daughter was working out, he did the same to her. The allegation detailed how he would discuss “tricks to boost sex power by suggesting exercises” with the young girls.
But the issue was hidden until the mother spotted the daughters avoiding the gym. The complainant is employed by a Mumbai private hospital. Her younger daughter is in class VII, while her older one is in class XI. In June, she became aware that the younger daughter had stopped attending the gym and that the other had started acting inappropriately. When she questioned them as to why they remained silent.
On November 24, at about 10:30 p.m., their mother arrived home from Mumbai. The older girl told her about her harrowing experiences. The complainant told the police that her younger kid told her sister during a game of “truth or dare” that a friend of hers was upset because the pool attendant misbehaved with her by embracing her and speaking to her inappropriately. She also disclosed to her younger sister that he made inappropriate sexual advances and conversations with her. The younger girl was encouraged by this, and they decided to tell their parents about their ordeal.
