Pune, 29th May 2021: The project of Pune Metro is progressing rapidly and the work of the underground metro station at Mahatma Phule Mandai is about to begin. Therefore, the Anti-Encroachment Department of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) vacated the premises of the Mandai building.

Maha Metro is working on an underground metro from Swargate to Shivajinagar. There will be a metro station in the Mandai area, there have been discussions for the last few months to relocate the vendors there. The traders were fine with relocating; however, they urged for proper rehabilitation. PMC has constructed a space for grocery shopkeepers, fruit sellers, and others behind the Hutatma Babu Genu parking lot and Kaka Halwai shop.

To get these traders there, the municipal corporation had started removing shops in the police presence on Saturday morning. The shopkeepers claim that the corporation has taken action without giving any prior notice to them. The traders warned that they will appeal to the court against this high-handedness while protesting against the municipal administration.

While talking on the issue, Madhav Jagtap, Head of Anti-Encroachment Department, said, “As there will be a metro station in the market, 70 licensed groceries, fruit and leaf vendors in the area will be rehabilitated. The site had to be vacated on Saturday morning as work had to begin. All legal procedures have been followed while taking action.”

“We told PMC to rehabilitate us according to the Metro’s blueprint when the work begins, yet this morning, the action was taken without any prior notice. Municipal officials, political leaders, and the police have taken this action on a wrong accord. We are going to court against this”, said Somnath Kachi, president of Mandai Galedharak Sanghatana.
