Pune: 731 Unclaimed Vehicles Auctioned, Police Generate Rs 50.1 Lakh
Pune, 25th May 2026: Pune City Police have generated over Rs 50 lakh through the e-auction of 731 abandoned and unclaimed vehicles seized from roads across the city as part of a special drive launched to clear traffic obstructions and improve road safety.
According to an official statement issued issued by the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Pune Police conducted the special campaign after large numbers of abandoned vehicles parked on roads for years were causing inconvenience to commuters and affecting traffic movement across the city.
The traffic branch, along with 18 traffic divisions and 11 police stations under Pune Police Commissionerate, identified and seized abandoned and ownerless vehicles from various parts of the city. Officials said efforts were also made to trace vehicle owners through public notices, advertisements and Regional Transport Office (RTO) verification.
Vehicles whose owners were traced were returned after due process, while police obtained court permission to dispose of the remaining unclaimed vehicles.
Under provisions of the Maharashtra Police Act, final approval was granted for auctioning some of the vehicles through Metal Scrap Trade Corporation Limited (MSTC Mumbai), a Government of India enterprise. The e-auction process was conducted on May 20, 2026.
Police said the auction included 366 vehicles from police stations and 373 vehicles from the traffic branch, taking the total number of auctioned vehicles to 731.
The auction generated revenue of Rs 50.10 lakh, which will be deposited with the government, officials said.
The drive was carried out under the guidance of Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar and senior police officials of the city police and traffic department.
Police said the action has helped reduce the problem of abandoned vehicles on city roads to some extent and appealed to citizens to inform the traffic department about abandoned vehicles parked on roads for long periods, causing obstruction and slowing down traffic movement.
