Pune, 9th January 2024: The Solid Waste Management Department of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has identified and compiled a list of locations in the city where garbage is consistently dumped. Out of these spots, 913 have been categorized as chronic dumping areas, and efforts are underway to address this issue through a combination of public awareness initiatives and punitive actions. Currently, 161 locations have successfully ceased the practice of waste dumping.

Despite recently earning a five-star ranking in the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, Pune still faces challenges related to waste management and cleanliness in public spaces. Factors such as the expanding urban area, population growth, insufficient garbage collection systems, and citizen behaviour contribute to the persistence of garbage dumping in streets, open areas, drains, and rivers within the city.

The Solid Waste Management Department conducted a comprehensive survey across its regional offices to compile a list of 913 chronic dumping spots. These areas are subject to daily cleaning efforts. The suburbs, particularly areas adjacent to the highway such as Warje, Aundh, Hadapsar, and Nagar Road, have a higher concentration of chronic dumping spots.

To address the issue, punitive actions are being taken against individuals found disposing of garbage improperly. Additionally, sanitation workers are actively involved in creating awareness by drawing rangolis and engaging with citizens at these identified locations.

The breakdown of chronic dumping spots by the regional office is as follows:
