Pune: AAP Demands Guaranteed Price For Onion And Brinjal Crops To Support Farmers

Pune, 1st March 2023: In recent days, the lack of price for onions has become a major issue in Pune, leaving onion producers in a state of distress. While there is a shortage of onions in the world market, there is no price for onions in the country, and the economic crisis in neighbouring countries is limiting exports. As a result, farmers are getting a measly Rs 2 per kg in hand, which is hardly enough to cover the production cost.

In protest against the indifferent and anti-farmer policy of the government, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) organized a demonstration at Vidhan Bhavan Pune. The divisional commissioner and other officers were gifted onions along with the report to draw attention to the plight of the farmers.

According to Mukund Kirdat, the district president of AAP, the overall anti-farmer policy of the government has left farmers with no option but to turn the plow in the field and discard their produce. He also accused the BJP government of making false promises, claiming that the farmer’s income would double in 2022.

Dattatraya Kad, the Purandar Taluka President, argued that the export policy should be implemented in such a way that domestic inflation and prices remain at appropriate levels. However, he blamed the government for prioritizing the convenience of traders over the needs of farmers, which has left them trapped in a cycle of poverty.

Sandeep Shinde, the AAP Chakan Convener, emphasized the need for a guaranteed price for crops such as onions and brinjal, whose production costs exceed the market value. He also criticized the chain of brokers who are superior to farmers, the lack of transport and storage infrastructure, and the planning of agricultural products, which make agriculture an insider’s business.

The Aam Aadmi Party has submitted a letter to the Divisional Commissioner for the Prime Minister, calling for immediate action to address the crisis. The letter was signed by AAP leaders such as Mukund Kirdat, Dattatraya Kad, Sandeep Shinde, Ravindra Jadhav, Sandeep Chondkar, Shahaji Kolte, Nirmal Sable, Abhijit Waghmare, Sahil Khaibekar, Satish Yadav, Akshay Shinde, Akash Chavan, Munesh Chavan, Tanmay Jadhav, Aditya Jadhav, and Rudra Thakar.
