Pune, 3rd July: A shocking case has emerged from Pune where abortion pills were allegedly sold at exorbitant rates, up to seven times higher than the original Maximum Retail Price (MRP). A resident from the Kirkatwadi area has filed a formal complaint with multiple authorities, including the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Medical Education and Drug Department, and the Health Department of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).

FDA Joint Commissioner Girish Hukare has ordered an investigation into the matter following the complaint filed by Rushikesh Tambilkar. According to Tambilkar, he visited a private hospital in Kirkatwadi along with his wife for an abortion procedure on 18th June. The hospital prescribed an Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) kit, but staff informed the couple that the kit would not be available elsewhere and must be purchased from their affiliated medical store, for a price of Rs 3,500.

Shockingly, the MRP on the packet was just Rs 437, and it was available online at a similar rate. Tambilkar’s written complaint also alleges that medicines prescribed to manage side effects were sold at rates up to seven times the printed price. He further stated that charges for sonography and consultation were also highly inflated.

The complaint has raised serious concerns over unethical profiteering by medical establishments. Authorities have assured a thorough probe and warned that strict action will be taken against anyone found guilty of overcharging patients.
