Pune: Acid Attack on Stray Dog near Kanhe Phata in Maval, FIR Registered
Pune, 15th May 2026: Police in Maval taluka have launched a probe after a community dog was allegedly attacked with acid near a residential society in Kanhe Phata, leaving the animal with severe burn injuries and sparking outrage among local residents and animal welfare volunteers.
An FIR against unidentified persons was registered by Vadgaon Maval Police on May 10, a day after the incident took place near Eco Valley Society Phase One. Police are examining CCTV footage from the area to identify those involved.
According to residents, the injured dog was found on the night of May 9 with extensive burn wounds suspected to have been caused by an acid attack. The animal was rushed for veterinary treatment and is currently being looked after by local caregivers and animal lovers.
Based on a complaint filed by Ajay Fawade, police registered a case under Section 325 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Section 11(1)(a) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960.
Section 325 of the BNS pertains to maiming or killing animals and carries punishment of up to five years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both. Section 11 of the PCA Act deals with acts causing unnecessary pain or suffering to animals.
Police have appealed to residents to share any information or video footage that could help identify the accused. Local residents and animal welfare activists have meanwhile demanded stricter surveillance and stronger measures to protect community animals in residential areas.
