Pune, 15th May 2026: Nearly a month after Pune police directed water tanker operators to install 360-degree CCTV cameras following two fatal accidents involving speeding tankers, the city police will launch a verification and enforcement drive from Monday to check compliance with the order.

Senior police officials said tanker owners found operating vehicles without the mandated surveillance systems or attendants would face penal action under the Motor Vehicles Act and could be barred from operating.

The police had earlier extended the deadline following operators’ request claiming that CCTV cameras were not easily available in the market.

The crackdown follows public outrage after two separate tanker accidents in April — one on NIBM Annexe Road and another in Wanowrie — claimed two lives. Following protests by residents, police had directed tanker operators to either appoint attendants for every vehicle or install 360-degree CCTV cameras to improve accountability and monitor rash driving.

The order had triggered an indefinite strike by tanker operators in Mohammadwadi and Undri on April 15, disrupting water supply to several housing societies. The agitation was later withdrawn after police agreed to provide a 15-day extension for installation of CCTV systems.
